We pride ourselves on delivering quality patient care through our experienced  inpatient and outpatient services. Our inpatient based in Southside of Glasgow is a 35 bedded service spread across 3 wards. This vacancy is to work on Tiree, a 12 bedded ward offering General, Private and Addictions services.

We are seeking applications for a permanent fulltime employed consultant position. We invite an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist with a passion to work in eating disorders to join our team, offering the chance to build and manage a very specialist inpatient eating disorder service based in Glasgow.

Job Advert Location Description

Main Purpose
This is a full-time employed consultant role in eating disorders (ED) is dedicated to providing clinical leadership and high-quality clinical care for patients referred to and using the eating disorders services at Priory Hospital Glasgow. The consultant will work closely within a multidisciplinary team to diagnose, treat, and manage eating disorders in inpatient setting by ensuring patients receive holistic, person-centric care and treatment adhering to Priory’s principles. The consultant will contribute to the development and implementation of service delivery plans and policies, and will play a key role in training and supervising junior medical staff and other healthcare professionals. with multi-disciplinary teams.

Employed ED Consultant 
This is a full-time (37.5 hours/week) permanent position with consultant responsibility for inpatient eating disorder service based at Priory Hospital Glasgow. Referrals to the service are primarily received from GPs and NHS, although occasionally from private (self-funding and Private Medical Insurance (PMI)) sources.

Salary range: Up to £160K plus a fixed on-calls supplement of £10K (1 in 5 rota). 

Experience
The post holder must be on the Specialist Register (CCT or CCST) or within 6 months of entering on it in general psychiatry, with experience and competencies in eating disorders. Specialist ED work experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings is desirable. The post holder is expected to demonstrate their ability to work at a consultant level as part of a wide multidisciplinary team. They must hold current full GMC registration with a license to practice. This role is specifically for psychiatrists who are on the GMC Specialist Register and have experience working in substantive Consultant positions in the NHS.

Knowledge & Skills
The post holder, in a senior medical practitioner capacity, is expected to demonstrate the knowledge and skills described under GMC’s Good Medical Practice.

Duties 

  • To be consultant responsible for up to 12 ED inpatients over two wards at Priory Hospital Glasgow.
  • If inpatient bed occupancy is low (less than 8 patients), a proportionate increase in outpatient assessments is expected.
  • To provide consultant advice to outpatients who may be receiving outpatient therapy from Priory Therapy Services.
  • To work closely with outpatient Therapy Services based within the hospital and at Wellbeing Centres for any outpatient-related inquiries.
  • To provide non-residential consultant 1 in 5 on-call cover for out-of-hours for Priory Hospital Glasgow inpatients.
  • To provide cross-cover for consultant colleagues as required.
  • To participate in hospital clinical governance activities and take up Quality Improvement activities as appropriate and delegated by the Hospital Senior Management Team.
  • The post-holder will have a prescribed connection with Priory Group (Designated Body) for Annual appraisals and Revalidation as per GMC guidelines.
  • The post-holder will have an agreed job plan with the Medical Director specifying expected activity levels in terms of time allocated for:
  • Direct clinical activities – inpatient responsibilities, outpatients, holiday cross-cover, on-call duties.
  • Indirect clinical activities – clinical admin, QI activities, clinical governance, business review meetings, attendance at Priory Service line Network meetings.
  • CPD (in line with their Personal Development Plan to support all required competencies for appraisal and revalidation) and supporting professional activities including external clinical and business networking activities.
  • In consultation with the post holder, the job plan will be reviewed annually or whenever the business/service needs change                                                       

Principles of Employment 

  • The post-holder will be appointed through a competitive application and interview process in line with relevant Priory policies.
  • Once appointed, consultants will be registered with all private health insurers in their own right as a private practitioner. While employed by Priory, they will not be entitled to receive any private patient fees personally for patients seen during their contracted hours. Priory will determine the amount billed for the consultants’ activity and will carry out all billing.

Key Accountabilities
Quality

  • Taking clinical responsibility for patients including multidisciplinary ward rounds, risk reviews, and the development of a therapeutic milieu.
  • Fulfilling the role of a Consultant for patients, including RMO responsibilities for those detained under the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003.
  • Supervising the process of referral and admission, including contributing to pre-admission assessments of patients with other team members.
  • Provide specialist assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for patients with eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, and other related conditions.
  • Develop individualised treatment plans, incorporating both medical and psychological interventions.
  • Manage the inpatient caseload, including complex cases, and ensure the delivery of evidence-based care.
  • Provide clinical leadership to the multidisciplinary team, including psychologists, dietitians, therapists, occupational therapists and nurses.
  • Collaborate with primary care providers, referring teams including general psychiatrists, and other specialists to ensure continuity of care for patients.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and carers, providing information and support throughout the treatment process.
  • Participate in service user engagement and feedback initiatives to continually improve the quality of care provided.
  • Supervising Specialty Doctor and Ward Doctor attached to the ward.
  • Contributing to management meetings and clinical governance meetings and contributing to the development of service strategy.
  • Engage in the activities of the Priory Eating Disorders Clinical Network.
  • Contributing to in-house training programmes within the services and offering supervision to other members of the multi-disciplinary team, particularly junior medical staff.
  • Contribute to and support research projects within the service, aiming to improve understanding and treatment of eating disorders.
  • Maintaining CPD and GMC Revalidation requirements as determined by the Royal College of Psychiatrists, GMC, or other relevant statutory bodies.
  • Proactively contributing to Priory’s marketing and PR activities through the production of articles and e-Shots in conjunction with the Marketing Team and providing comment on topical issues to ensure the Group is seen as a thought leader in the healthcare business.

Person Specification

  • MRCPsych or equivalent
  • Section 22 approved AMP under MH (C&T) (S) Act 2003
  • Acute inpatient and outpatient experience
  • Current CCT or within 6 months of obtaining CCT in General Adult Psychiatry
  • Confidence and competence to work in eating disorders
  • Experience working with a multi-disciplinary team and being able to function as a clinical leader within their role
  • Experience supervising junior medical staff
  • Experience working with a management team in clinical governance and improvement activities is desirable
  • Experience in service development, change, and improvement is desirable
