Job Advert Role Description

Kemple View is a 90 bedded hospital with 4 LSU and 2 low secure and recovery wards for male service users only. All patients are detained under the Mental Health Act and their care is NHS funded.


Many of our patients have previously been in high, medium or low security. We aim to work collaboratively with our patients enabling them to take increasing responsibility for managing their own risks leading to a controlled and graded discharge. Where a patient requires greatest support we offer contextual risk management, enhancing compliance and aim to improve their quality of life.  We serve the patient, carers and visitors.


Kemple View also has a dedicated and purpose-built ward offering Low Secure Forensic Specialist Older Age service for patients.


This is an exciting opportunity to work within a dynamic medical team within a CQC rated OUTSTANDING hospital.  


We are looking for highly motivated Consultant Psychiatrist/Medical Director to complement our existing medical work force.  This role would be ideal for a candidate with Medical Director experience or a senior Consultant Psychiatrist looking for career progression. Ideally the post holder would have forensic, rehabilitation or older adult psychiatry experience.  We want someone who can help deliver a real and lasting difference to our patients, by building a culture that supports our values and puts the people we care for at the centre of what we do.

This is a fulltime role of 37.5 hours per week which can be worked over 4 or 5 days.  We operate a non-residential medical on call rota and the post holder is expected to participate on the on-call rota which is first on 1:4.7 which will be remunerated.  


Responsibilities of the role are as follows:

  • Be the named Responsible Clinician for 16  inpatients and hold Approved Clinician Status.
  • Work in collaboration with the MDT to monitor day to day progress and review care plans as needed
  • Participate in MDT reviews, complete risk assessments and follow up on agreed actions
  • Liaise with professionals external to the hospital, including robust discharge planning and 117 aftercare arrangements.
  • Liaise with the Practice Nurse and visiting GP in delivering physical health care and emergency treatment to patients who may have complex needs
  • Participate in morning MDT handovers
  • Undertake pre-admission assessments.  
  • Contribute to the development and evaluation of services in collaboration with members of the Senior Management Team
  • Provide line management and professional accountability for other medical colleagues on site.
  • Work closely with the Hospital Director and site SMT to ensure the service is clinically safe, well led, effective and compliant with all CQC / NHS regulatory requirements.
  • Lead on / support / advise on any serious medical incident investigations / root cause analysis investigations etc.
  • Provide clear leadership on clinical standards for the Hospital and to take specific responsibility for specific quality measures, at the minimum: prescribing errors, compliance with the Mental Health Act / Mental Capacity Act, quality of the MDT meetings, risk assessments and risk management strategies.
  • You will be asked to attend Service Line Network meetings, Clinical Governance and other clinical forums in relation to the role.

Person Specification:

Essential Criteria:

  • Current GMC registration with license to practice and be on the Specialist Register for any of the following: Forensic Psychiatry, Rehabilitation Psychiatry, General Adult Psychiatry or Older Adult Psychiatry (or be within six months of attaining Specialist Registration)
  • Appraisal within the last 12 months
  • Section 12 and Approved Clinician approval
  • Experience of working in an adult inpatient setting
  • Membership of Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent.

CQC visit 2019
In the recent CQC visit, Kemple View was rated ‘outstanding’ for the second time in a row. Kemple View received this rating in all the five assessments: “are we safe”, “effective”, “caring”, “responsive” and “well led”. This is an incredible achievement for Team KV and we are all extremely proud. 


National Workforce Awards 2019
The hospital Director nominated the working well group for the “Best Well-being and Staff Engagement Initiative”. The team were short listed and 10 employees travelled to London for the Awards evening. The team didn't win but it was an amazing recognition.
