About the service

Set within picturesque landscaped gardens in Cheadle, Stockport, Priory Hospital Cheadle Royal offers a range of comprehensive inpatient mental health services for young people and adults. The focus of our service is to help people to live their best life in a safe and supportive environment.

Fern Unit is a locked rehabilitation unit that runs a comprehensive Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) treatment programme. Patients admitted to the ward for treatment may have a range of diagnoses including emotionally unstable personality disorder, complex PTSD and eating disorders, and, co-morbid mental disorders such as psychosis, and substance misuse. The focus within the milieu is to empower and skill the patients to manage and plan their own lives in a safe and effective way, promoting independence, realistic goal-setting, and autonomy, and providing the necessary generalisation of DBT skills to their daily lives.  Based on the core principles of a DBT approach, the aim is to discharge patients to ‘a life worth living’.

The multi-disciplinary team (MDT) on Fern comprises the nursing team which includes the unit manager,  two deputy managers, registered mental health nurses, and general nurses (RMN/RGN), therapeutic care assistants, a consultant psychiatrist, a clinical psychologist, a counselling psychologist, assistant psychologist, , dietician, a speciality grade doctor, an Occupational Therapist  and a technical instructor.  We are also able to access Social Work and GP expertise on site.

All members of the team have had the appropriate level of accredited DBT training, and newcomers will also be able to access this.  As a nurse on the service there is the option to attend additional intensive DBT training allowing you to engage with some patients as a nurse therapist.
