Job Advert Role Description

Would you like to join a well-established, motivated and visionary Psychology team, embedded within a successful and respected service? If you’re looking to take your next meaningful steps within your psychology career, either as a newly qualified or more experienced psychologist, then we have the opportunity for you.  We have a vacancy for a suitably qualified, Forensic, Clinical or Counselling Psychologist at Stockton Hall Hospital, part of the Priory Group.  As a newly qualified psychologist, the opportunities for personal development, amongst a friendly and experienced team are vast.  Alternatively, if you’re a more experienced psychologist, there are fantastic opportunities to shape future service delivery, both within the hospital and wider forums.

At Stockton Hall Hospital, just outside York, we are well-known for producing positive clinical outcomes for highly complex patients. We currently provide a medium-secure care setting in which patients access a broad range of therapeutic interventions including one-to-one and group-based psychological treatments. Our service has produced excellent recovery results for patients, maximising their opportunity to progress to conditions of lower-security and community settings as safely and efficiently as possible.

The hospital is currently split across seven wards, providing care for up to 88 male and female patients with a broad range of diagnoses including autism spectrum disorder, learning disability, mental illness, and personality disorder. This diverse patient population makes Stockton Hall a fulfilling and stimulating environment in which to work, and provides the opportunity to develop a broad range of clinical skills as well as areas of clinical specialism.  The hospital is currently undergoing an exciting process of service reconfiguration and opportunities to be involved in new service developments are available.  Stockton Hall is part of the Humber Coast and Vale Provider Collaborative and contribute to wider strategic developments within this.

The successful individual will be an enthusiastic and motivated forensic, clinical or counselling psychologist.  You will have full registration as a Practitioner Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Post-qualification experience of working with complex patients ideally in a secure or locked setting, as well as experience of supervising others is advantageous but not essential.  Applications from newly qualified psychologists or those awaiting a qualification award are also welcomed.  Applications from those who would prefer part-time or flexible working arrangements are encouraged.

You will be involved in the provision of both assessment and treatment, including the use of structured risk assessment measures and one-to-one and group-based interventions relating to a range of potential risks and mental health needs such as sexual and violent offending, fire-setting, insight based work, substance misuse and emotion regulation. The role will require implementation of specialist psychological interventions as per NICE and best practice guidelines.  Therapeutic modalities used within treatment currently draw on a range of approaches including: Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Cognitive Analytic Therapy, Compassion-Focused Therapy, and EMDR.  We would welcome applications from individuals with experience in any of these approaches, however, don’t let this put you off, there are great opportunities for CPD going forward.

Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team you will strive to promote a psychologically informed approach within the hospital; specifically, we are working to develop our trauma informed working practices within the psychology department and wider hospital. Your role will, therefore, incorporate wider activities including staff training, reflective practice, formulation and staff de-brief sessions, service development and evaluation, research, and provision of clinical supervision.  Reflective practice is well supported and valued within the hospital and our psychology team are instrumental in facilitating this.   Our reflective practice model is based on Cognitive Analytic Therapy.

As a department we actively support the development of aspiring psychologists, through offering placements for clinical and forensic trainee psychologists and supporting psychology graduates on their journey to qualification.  Opportunities for supervision, training and mentoring others is supported and encouraged.

If this sounds like the opportunity for you then please get in touch for an informal discussions or to arrange a visit to meet the team.   Please contact Katy Baigrie, Head of Psychology, or Tracy Brookes, Consultant Forensic Psychologist, on 01904 400500.
