Job Advert Role Description

Priory Hospital Burgess Hill is seeking a Consultant Psychiatrist for Edith Cavell Ward.

The hospital provides care and treatment for patients with a wide range of Mental Health issues on an inpatient basis. All of the beds are commissioned by the NHS across two wards. Wendy Orr Ward is an 8 bedded male PICU and Edith Cavell Ward is a 16 bedded male acute ward.

Clinical input is provided by one Consultant Psychiatrist, a Psychologist and an Occupational Therapist and Occupational Therapy Assistant with a full therapies timetable.

The Role : 

We are now looking to appoint a Consultant Psychiatrist (General Adult Specialist Register).  We want someone who can help deliver a real and lasting difference to our patients, by building a culture that supports our values and puts the people we care for at the centre of what we do.

This role is a Monday to Friday 0900 - 1700 role, with an oncall commitment covering three sites out of hours (Priory Hospital Burgess Hill, Priory Hospital Ticehurst and Priory Hospital Dorking). The current oncall commitment is 1 in 5, but this is likely to reduce as the service expands.

As part of the multi-disciplinary team, you will be accountable for the delivery of high quality clinical services for our patients.

Responsibilities of the role are as follows:

  • Undertake paper review assessments for clients referred to the unit to determine the appropriateness of the referral and to initiate the care planning
  • Be the named Responsible Clinician for patients admitted to Priory Hospital Burgess Hill and hold Approved Clinician Status.
  • Supervise the completion of discharge summaries, reports and other associated documentation as necessary, in a timely manner (for those completed by the specialty doctor)
  • Support the Practice Nurse in delivering physical health care and emergency treatment to patients who may have complex needs
  • Participate in morning MDT handovers
  • Work in collaboration with the MDT to monitor day to day progress and review care plans as needed
  • Participate in weekly MDT reviews, complete risk assessments and follow up on agreed actions
  • Liaise with professionals external to the hospital, including robust discharge planning and 117 aftercare arrangements.

The applicant would also be expected to engage in the wider hospital governance process and quality improvement agenda, including quality walk arounds and audit, as well as supervision and teaching of medical students that we have placed with us from Brighton Medical School.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria:

  • Current GMC registration with license to practice and be on the Specialist Register for General Adult Psychiatry (or be within six months of attaining Specialist Registration)
  • Clinical skills and competencies consistent with experience of at least three years in psychiatry (working at or above Registrar level)
  • Appraisal within the last 12 months
  • Section 12 and Approved Clinician approval
  • Experience of working in an acute adult inpatient setting
  • Membership of Royal College of Psychiatrists
