Job Description

Assists the Head chef with the operation of a large catering service within the hospital. With particular emphasis on the preparing, cooking and serving of meals and the day to day organisation of the department, ensuring all activities and operations comply with operational standards and statutory regulations.


  • Ensures the effective and efficient preparation and delivery of all aspects of food preparation and cooking.
  • Actively involved in the preparation, cooking and serving of food, ensuring operational standards comply with the company’s “Food Safety Policies “, guidelines and regulations.
  • Maintains the kitchens and areas to the highest possible standard of cleanliness and hygiene.
  • Assists the Head Chef with placing orders, ensuring stock rotation is organised in an efficient manner.
  • Maintains accurate records and audits.
  • Contributes to menu planning, taking into account healthy eating guidelines and dietary, nutritional and religious requirements.
  • Ensures all equipment faults are reported to the Head Chef and liaises with contractors as and when required.
  • Provides information to the Head Chef regarding staff timekeeping, sickness and holiday requests and any performance or rota issues, to ensure the needs of the service are met at all times. 
  • Attends meetings as and when required.
  • Works within and leads the catering team alongside the Head Chef.
  • Assists with the transportation of the food across site as and when required.
  • Provides cover for the Head Chef in their absence.
  • Required to work a mixture of day shifts - Kitchen operates 7 days a week 07.30-18.30.

Knowledge / Education / Skills

  • Qualified to NVQ2/3 or equivalent
  • Numerate and literate with good IT skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Good time management, organisation and leadership skills
  • First Class customer service skills and passionate about food
  • Driving licence


  • At least 3 years’ experience of preparing and cooking meals gained within a large professional kitchen environment. 


About Kneesworth: 

Kneesworth House is a 155 bed mental health hospital situated in Cambridgeshire (on the borders of Hertfordshire) with good commuting access to / from London. The hospital has a full pathway of care including medium, low secure, locked rehabiltation and open recovery wards  situated across the site.
