Job Advert Role Description

The Priory Hospital Southampton is part of the Priory group offering inpatient treatment for a wide range of mental health difficulties. The hospital is located in Marchwood on the outskirts of Southampton and comprises of 40 inpatient beds across three wards.

Services provided at the hospital include two adult acute wards treating most psychiatric conditions and Eating Disorders. We have a highly experienced team of mental health professionals and support staff which include consultant psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses and therapists.

Sandpiper Ward - Adults: This is an acute admissions unit comprising 17 beds.  Skylark Ward -  Eating Disorders:  11 bedded specialist eating disorders unit

Starling Ward - Adults: This is an acute admissions unit comprising 12 beds.  inpatient unit

The hospital has a combination of employed and visiting consultants and well established multidisciplinary teams in all wards including nursing, therapy, occupational therapy and psychology input. 

The hospital has been rated as “Good” in recent CQC inspection with “outstanding” rating in the "caring" domain.

The main purpose of the Catering Assistant is to support the provision of the catering operation assisting with basic food preparation and the cleaning of the kitchen enviroment maintaining good hygiene standards.

  • Assists catering staff with the preparation of meals in accordance with the company’s Assured Safe Catering policies and procedures
  • Under direction, takes responsibility for parts of the catering operation, other tasks include -
    • Taking orders.
    • Cleaning the kitchen area's including work surfaces, walls and floors.
    • Washing dishes and kitchen appliances.
    • Unloading deliveries.
    • Basic food preparation such as peeling and chopping.
    • Plating up food, ensuring correct portion control.
    • Serving food.
  • As part of the catering team, the role holder will be required to ensure the kitchen and associated areas meet operational hygiene standards and comply with the company’s Assured Safe Catering policies and procedures
  • The role holder requires basic numeracy and literacy skills together with an appreciation of basic food hygiene
  • Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills are an important feature as the nature of the role necessitates frequent interaction with staff, patients and visitors involving the exchange of information
  • Usually works within existing processes and procedures, however, the nature of food preparation will require some creative thinking
  • Occasionally required to assist less experienced colleagues
  • Responsible for the appropriate use of various pieces of catering equipment
  • Informatics Responsibility for maintaining appropriate records and data as required under the company’s Assured Safe Catering policies and guidelines
  • Well developed observational and listening skills
  • Flexibility and adaptability as usually, the role holder will work within existing procedures; occasionally, the role holder may be required to adapt their behaviour within existing processes, in order to accommodate requests from patients, pupils and other colleagues
  • Intelligent problem solving & knowledge gained through experience and supervised practice
  • Great Team player
  • Strong “can do” attitude

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Experience in a catering environment is not essential as full training is provided.

  • The role holder works within a busy kitchen environment using a variety of equipment where many routine tasks are repetitive and require a degree of sustained physical effort and concentration
  • The role holder will be required to take part in Priory’s mandatory training programme
