The Opportunity

We’re looking for a proactive, mature, and experienced Ward Manager to lead a dynamic team on our 20-bed low secure ward. You will play a key leadership role in developing staff, maintaining clinical excellence, and ensuring a safe, therapeutic environment for our patients.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide visible leadership and clinical management to a team of approximately 20 staff (60% HCAs, 40% RMNs)
  • Ensure safe and effective rota planning, staffing levels, annual leave, and training
  • Conduct staff supervisions, appraisals, and drive performance and development
  • Act as a role model to promote learning, engagement, and a positive culture
  • Oversee the delivery of high-quality, individualised care plans
  • Maintain standards around physical health, risk management, and safeguarding
  • Promote QI (Quality Improvement) initiatives and support Safe Wards implementation
  • Lead on incident reviews, debriefs, investigations, and HR processes
  • Work closely with the multidisciplinary team, external stakeholders, and families
  • Deputise for the Director of Clinical Services when required
  • Participate in the hospital’s on-call rota and contribute to audits, training, and recruitment initiatives

What We’re Looking For:

  • NMC Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN)
  • Previous experience as a Ward Manager (or equivalent senior role)
  • Strong leadership skills with experience in change management and team development
  • Proven track record of managing staff, performance, and disciplinary processes
  • Experience working within a low secure, forensic, or acute mental health setting
  • Background in Quality Improvement (QI)
  • Thorough understanding of Safe Wards and reducing restrictive practices
  • Knowledge of Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, and related legislation
